The free radical theory of aging was first proposed in the 1950s by Dr. Denham Harman. Dr. Harman theorized that reactive oxygen species (ROS), free radicals that form as byproducts of the normal metabolism of oxygen, cause damage inside the body’s cells. Later research has shown that free radical damage increases as we age. In some organisms, lifespan has been increased by reducing free radical damage. Luckily, it is believed that antioxidants can be used to stop free radicals before they damage our cells! Of course, aging happens due to much more complex interactions in addition to free radical damage, and is still being studied today. While scientists continue to research aging, it may be a good idea to use antioxidants like CBD.
Studies Show CBD Can Relieve Stress and Anxiety
People of every age must cope with stress and anxiety. While a national survey has shown that the prevalence of anxiety disorders decreases with age, it is normal for health and financial concerns to cause worry among older adults. There is no substitute for a good therapist when stress and anxiety become issues, but current research suggests that CBD may help provide a little relief too.
Research specifically into the relationship of CBD to age-related anxiety is scarce. Other research into CBD and anxiety does show that CBD may offer therapeutic potential. A 2011 study in the Journal of Psychopharmacology involving patients with generalized social anxiety disorder found that CBD was associated with significantly decreased subjective anxiety relative to placebo. Another study showed that CBD could reduce anxiety related to public speaking. When feeling stressed take a deep breath, relax, and consider adding CBD to your daily care ritual.
CBD for Arthritis?
Aches and pains are a part of life. Unfortunately, they can become a more common part of life as we get older. Suffering is not the only option though, and CBD holds promise as a natural alternative to traditional methods of pain management. Among other types of pain, it is interesting that CBD may help those with arthritis.
A 2017 study has shown that CBD prevents pain and nerve damage in rats suffering from osteoarthritis. The results indicate that CBD may help provide relief for people with osteoarthritis, but readers should keep in mind that animal models do not always translate to humans. Due to the stigma of marijuana and its association with CBD, it has been challenging for researchers to investigate the use of CBD to treat pain in humans. Now that hemp and hemp-derived CBD have been federally legalized, we will probably start to see more studies on the effectiveness of CBD for pain management.
